A GEDCOM file is a file with names, dates, locations, and notes that is in a special format that can be read by other genealogy programs.  GEDCOM is from GEnealogy Data COMmunications.  It is pronounced like JEDCOM.  Not all information from one program will transfer to another. Some information does not transfer well in a gedcom file, but all of the basic information should transfer ok.
